Adding a Veteran Presence
John Alonso, who spent parts of last season with two different Frontier League teams, will join the Beach Bums for 2009...
Formerly of the Brewers system, Alonso began last season with the Washington Wild Things after being let go by the Brewers...I had a conversation with Brett Bostelman last night who recounted a mammouth homer that Alonso hit against him at Washington's CONSOL Energy Park in Bostelman's first pro start...Alonso played 10 games with the Wild Things before being released and obtained by the Gateway Grizzlies...With Gateway he appeared in 30 games, hitting a pair of homers and driving in 14...Alonso played first base and third base for both Washington and Gateway...
Alonso hit .280 for the West Virginia Power in 2007 in 74 games of action with six homers and 59 RBI, both professional bests...He began 2008 with the Power and suited up in 18 games before being released...Former Traverse City Manager Jeff Isom was the manager for West Virginia last season, a Low-A affiliate...Alonso hit .301 for the Arizona Brewers in 2006 and began his pro career by hitting .323 for Helena of the Pioneer League in 2005...
23 years old, Alonso was a 12th round pick by the Brewers in 2005...He has five years of professional experience but is an LS-1 by Frontier League standards for the 2009 season...
