Gehring for Nathanson
I made a reference last week to a major trade involving a veteran pitcher...Details were officially released today...
Left-handed pitcher Ryan Gehring, who has been with the Beach Bums since the beginning of the organization in 2006, was dealt to the Joliet JackHammers of the Northern League...Gehring completes the trade from last spring training that brought the Beach Bums David Nathanson and Shannon Wirth...Nathanson had been traded from Traverse City earlier in the 2008 offseason while Wirth was released in spring training...
Gehring started the All-Star Game in front of a capacity crowd at Wuerfel Park last summer and is the owner of every career pitching record...The periodic victim of a lack of run support, he finished 5-9 last year with three shutouts and a miniscule ERA of 2.71 which ranked fourth in the league...
Gehring will be missed in Traverse City, but veteran pitchers are hard to hang on to since a team's roster by Frontier League rules can only have a maximum of three veterans...One other veteran on the roster for 2009 is All-Star starting center fielder Mike Epping...
