Southern Illinois Gets a Big Leaguer

Clay Zavada will become the second former Frontier League player to make his Major League debut when he takes the hill for the first time with the Arizona Diamondbacks...Zavada will be the 19th player from the Frontier League to reach the majors...

Zavada has a truly unique story, read all about it in the Pantagraph Story linked below, and was with Southern Illinois to begin last season before he was sold to the D-Backs in what was nearly a straight trade with the club that was eventually rejected by MLB...Zavada was gone by the time the Beach Bums faced the Miners, but he went 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA and four saves in his 12 appearances in the Frontier League last season...He was placed on Arizona's 40-man roster to start the season and received the call from Double-A...

Chris Jakubauskas, formerly of Florence and Ohio Valley, debuted earlier this season with the Seattle Mariners and is in their starting rotation...

The photo came from the Frontier League website and is Zavada posing with Southern Illinois Manager Mike Pinto at Diamondbacks Spring Training this winter...
