Opening Day Roster

The opening day roster has been set along with the rotation for the first series of the year...I know that the final cuts did not come easily...

The final cuts were a pair of experienced outfielders in Cody McMorris and Raphael Turner...Two cuts were necessary due to the addition of a veteran in the outfield...Jereme Milons joined the team today...Milons spent 2011 with both Southern Illinois and Lake Erie, appearing in the playoffs with the Crushers...An All-Star starter in 2010 with Southern Illinois, Milons is the career leader in stolen bases for the Miners...

The other cuts came from the pitching staff...Relievers Matt Collins and Jamaal Hollis were released, bringing the total on the staff to 24...

Here's the full release with details on how many players came from where and the rookie vs. experienced breakdown...

Meanwhile...

Robby Donovan has been named as the opening night starter...Donovan was impressive in the spring allowing just one run in two starts...The big right-hander reached High-A in the Astros organization, pitchign in the California League...

And Then There Was One

Greetings from Windy City's Standard Bank Stadium...This afternoon its the final exhibition contest of the season as the Boomers take on the ThunderBolts...Windy City's string of playoff appearances came to an end last year...Boomer Bench Coach Mike Kashirsky managed the ThunderBolts the past two seasons...Windy City is now managed by former Big Leaguer and Frontier League success story Morgan Burkhart...

Windy City's roster pretty much sorted itself out due to injuries...There are a few decisions yet to be made for the Boomers today...

Man, I am sitting in a seriously comfy chair...I don't think I could broadcast from this chair...Its like a lounge chair and its fluffy...I could take a nap in this puppy...CUE the shout out music...Today I'm thinking it's Blake Shelton since his entire repertoire came on my iPod in the ride over (Again I drove myself)...No, the shout out isn't for you today Sara Romano...It is for Groundskeeper Mike Tlusty, who told me to avoid jumping on 294 from over by Schaumburg...I heeded his advice and drove back down by me and still hit some construction (See my post from the Gary series about driving down 294)...

Reminder, these two teams will meet in the second series of the season for the Boomers beginning with a 10:35 a.m. game on May 22...

No uniforms for Windy City but I am told that there will be minimal subs due to the fact that the roster is set and they are using a 10-man lineup...Oops...The Windy City grounds crew needs to rechalk the first base line...

What a day for baseball!!! Windy City takes the field...

That's a good way to head into the regular season...Boomers finish 4-4-1 this spring...Lots to be posted tomorrow and I will of course let you know of changes as I hear them...I should have a full run down of spring stats for you tomorrow as well as the rotation for the weekend and so much more...

Looking Ahead

In the days to come many things will be happening before the start of the season...These will happen in no particular order...

First, final cuts will be made and the opening day roster set...This could come as soon as following today's exhibition at Windy City, which I will be live blogging from as usual bu there is no broadcast today...

Second, tomorrow I will be interviewing Frontier League Commissioner Bill Lee and will post the audio on here as I talk with him about the Frontier League, kind of an introduction to the league if you will...

Third, my first interview with Jamie Bennett will be posted...But not until after it airs on opening night...I will likely record the interview tomorrow and post it on Friday...

Fourth, duh, the season starts...Season opener is Friday night at Lake Erie, who qualified for the playoffs in 2011...First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. CDT...Avon, Ohio is in the Eastern Time zone...I will post links for that as the game nears...

Fifth, I will be attending the Indians game on Thursday as part of my annual tuneup for the season...A few things I like to do before the year is just get out, enjoy the weather, and observe a non-league game...Last season during the first trip I hit a Ranger game and a Royals game...I also usually get a massage and a haircut, although that will wait until the home opener, or at least until I return from Cleveland...I will also be saying farewell to the beard...Likely on Thursday night...I will almost always travel with the team with a few exceptions, this week being one of them since I was in Lake Erie in 2010 I will be driving out early and staying with my host family from that season...Most commuter trips I will also make by myself...

Sixth, I will be taking my hand at writing some kind of preview...Not sure if you heard last night's broadcast (Though I think it is archived if you want to go back and listen), but I was talking about the West Division and the Boomers are going to be in a seriously tough division...I will start with the East first and then progress to the West in two separate team by team capsules tomorrow...

Man, that looks like a lot...But I am looking forward to it...Afterall, baseball season is upon us!!!

Jumpin' to Joliet

Cue the shout out music...Word Up Sara Romano!!! Shipping up to Boston!!! Took me like 40 minutes to get to Joliet from Schaumburg while taking the highway instead of the back roads...

On the road with the roster down to 27...

A visit to the defending champs...I love this ballpark...Don't think I have been here since like 2005 or something like that though...Both teams are starting to take shape...Big ups to the Joliet staff for hooking me up with some food in the Hall of Fame room downstairs...Num num num..We will see if Jamie Bennett decides to make changes today or, if like yesterday, he lets the majority of his lineup play...

I had my first extended convo with the Skipper today and he said for the most part that the lineups have just been based on what will get guys at bats and will not necessarily look that way during the season, though I suspect that the Hall-Pfister 3-4 combo may not change...Jamie was also mentioning to me that it will be good to get under the lights tonight since afterall probably five of every six games will be at night...This is just the second night contest of the exhibition slate...Exhibition schedule wraps up tomorrow at Windy City in a 2:00 p.m. affair...

Joliet was rained out again this weekend so the Slammers have played only one other game since seeing Schaumburg on Friday...The Slammers open the regular season on Thursday with a single game at Windy City before three games at Gateway this weekend...Home opener and ring ceremony is on Tuesday, May 22 against Traverse City...

This is the first home exhibition for the champs so they will run a majority of their promotions and whatnot...Also, I am again working with Aaron Morse to broadcast...I hear there will even be video...Just a high home, but still...Pictures with your audio...

Closing In

The roster now stands at 27 players...

Released today were...
OF Pat Biserta
IF Jordan Castaldo
IF Ellis Lowe
C Brad Hawn
LHP Vinny Lally
RHP Wally Goodline
RHP Andy Heston

Inside of a week until the season opener...Frontier League opening day is on Wednesday...Rosters must be set by then...The Boomers have two more exhibitions to help solve the remaining battles, a lot of which now stand on the pitching staff...I think the infield is just about set and the catchers are certainly set...

Rollin' with the Riverhawks

Last home game of the spring today as the Boomers welcome the Rockford Riverhawks...

Seems like a smaller clubhouse...Jamie Bennett and his staff have been hard at work evaluating talent over the past couple days giving guys longer looks to determine what direction to go with the 2012 squad...I know some cuts were made before today's game and will provide details once I can acquire them...In the meantime, the Boomers look to halt a three-game spring slide...One note...After yesterday, the Boomers have allowed 14 unearned runs in six exhibition...That can't happen in the regular season...

Today is the final exhibition for Rockford...The Boomers have road games Monday night at Joliet and Tuesday afternoon at Windy City...Both teams will use 10-man lineups...
