Fun With Brittany and Bernie

I had a tremendous time last night with Brittany and Bernie from NBC's The Biggest Loser...I am going to use this slot to post some of the fun...Plenty of pictures were taken at the game and I escorted the pair on a morning radio interview tour where more photos were taken...I'll post audio here along with some pictures if I can figure out how to do that...

First up is the Morning Hustle With Craig Russell Interview...I Made a ton of visits there this week, but here's the Brittany and Bernie segments...
Fox FM Morning Hustle Interview

Homestand Interviews

While I posted the first Cahill's Corner which you did not hear in the broadcast due to technical difficulties earlier in the week, I thought that I would post all the interviews...I was going to put them in each game's recap and probably will as the season progresses, but in the meantime here's what you've missed...

Cahill's Corner #2 from May 22

Labatt Blue On Deck Show Discussion With Bryan Rembisz from May 22

Farm Bureau Insurance Beach Bums After Show Interview With Kyle Maunus from May 22

Farm Bureau Insurance Beach Bums After Show Interview With Mike Epping from May 21

Beach Bums Weekly #2 Morning Hustle With Craig Russell

Every Friday morning I appear on The Fox FM's Morning Hustle With Craig Russell during the 8 o'clock hour...The time is usually right around 8:40am...Following each interview I will post the full audio here...Click below to check out what Craig and I discussed today before the Beach Bums close out their season opening homestand...

Meet Denny McLain Tonight!

Former Detroit Tiger Denny McLain will be at Wuerfel Park tonight to sign autographs and throw out the first pitch...McLain is the last Major League pitcher to win 30 games, winning 31 in 1968 with the Tigers, who won the World Championship...McLain was the 1968 AL MVP and Cy Young winner...

McLain will sign autographs for fans from 5:30-6:30 pm, limit one per person. He is in Traverse City to promote the upcoming Sports Celebrity Weekend (June 27-28) at Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos. He will make a pre-game presentation to the Beach Bums fans about the Rainbow Connection, a Michigan organization that makes dreams come true for children suffering from life threatening illness. Proceeds from the Sports Celebrity Weekend will go to benefit the Rainbow Connection.

The Wuerfel Park Turf

I am going to try and get this interview in a broadcast at some point...if nothing else during a rain delay...Yesterday afternoon I sat down with Rich Jordan of General Sports Venue...He was the project manager for the installation of the AstroTurf GameDay XPE Turf at Wuerfel Park...He told me that the installation at Wuerfel Park was one of the quickest ever...Rich talks to me about the specifics of the turf at Wuerfel Park as well as why many baseball teams are starting to make the switch plus much, much, more...Interview length is 10 minutes on the head...Rich was in Traverse City for the home opener and stayed through yesterday afternoon...

2-0!

I didn't get to post last night as I went out with our guests from The Biggest Loser after the contest...Here are the thoughts on win number two, a 4-2 decision over Midwest...

Here's My Game Recap

Ryan Gehring equals wow! That was as good as Gehring looked all of last season and it came in his first start of 2008...The poll question on the front page of the website is who's performance to start the season was better, Bryan Rembisz or Ryan Gehring...Rembisz retired the first 10 batters he faced while Gehring allowed only one hit, retiring the last 15 in a row...Rembisz threw very well in his first start...but I give the edge to Gehring...

Mike Epping had two more hits last evening and is the only player to have tallied multi-hit contests in the first two games...The Beach Bums drew a total of 10 walks, showing patience at the plate...Mike Goetz drew three of those...Goetz was caught stealing twice, one of which was on a hit and run where the pitch was a fastball way high...Steve Young dropped down two sacrifice bunts...Lets not forget that in 2006 he set a Frontier League record with 21...

The big things to remember is that it is still very early in the season...the only problem I've seen so far has come in the bullpen...Nick Pepper recorded the save last night, but after Jeff Williams recorded the first two outs of the ninth easily, Midwest was able to load the bases and score a pair without really having to swing the bat...The bullpen ERA is 7.20 in the first two games having allowed four earned runs in five innings of work...A strength last season, I am sure the bullpen will get it going as the season progresses...The goal was for the bullpen to need to get nine outs or less and they've done that in the first two nights, preserving wins despite the minor struggles...

Highlights
Mike Goetz 2-run Single in the 8th

Media Recaps of Opening Night

Lots of coverage on last night's win in the area today...I hung out with Brittany and Bernie this morning and they are amazing! I'm really looking forward to having them join me in the booth tonight (Assuming technical problems go away...Grrr!)...I plan on posting the audio from their interview on The Fox FM right here as well as my discussion this evening...I'd also like to welcome you to submit questions that I will ask them for you...tim@tcbeachbums.com is my email...Brittany is throwing out the first pitch tonight...Bernie got to do the honors in an appearance at Wrigley Field earlier this year I guess...He's banking on Brittany one-hopping the plate...I would also have much more audio highlights from last evening's game were it not for the technical problems...As I was out with Brittany and Bernie this morning I noticed several people reading the paper today, and everyone was already a buzz over what the Beach Bums did last night...A full Frontier League recap from last evening is also on the docket this morning...

Brittany and Bernie Appearances

Tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park will be Fitness Night...Brittany and Bernie from NBC's The Biggest Loser will be on hand to sign autographs and share their story...I will be spending part of the morning with the pair, making appearances on local radio stations...The first is scheduled for around 8am on WTCM with Jack O'Malley, a country station, the second will be on The Fox FM's Morning Hustle With Craig Russell probably around 8:45am or so...Listen in throughout the area and online as well...I am looking forward to spending some time with these two...

Wow!!!!!

Well...they say you only get one chance to make a first impression and that first impressions are everything...Let me sum up opening night in one word...Wow!!! This is really a team you need to see in person...They are a lot of fun to watch and work well together...

9-5 win over Midwest...the first ever season opening win in Beach Bums history...Bryan Rembisz looked in midseason form from last year, striking out six in his six innings of work...He retired the first 10 batters of the game and earned the win...Striking early was a huge key Jon Cahill talked with me about...Check! Speed...Check! Defense...Check! Clutch hitting...Check!

I really enjoyed chatting with Midwest's Manager Eric Coleman...look for something from him on Friday...He coached Mike Epping in the Coastal Plains League a few years back...I am also going to talk to the project manager for the turf tomorrow, look for something on that here as well...

Here's my official game Recap

Highlights included Mike Goetz's Sacrifice Fly

Jake Whitesides with a leadoff triple in the 3rd

And Steve Young's RBI Single

I hope lots of you listened in and stayed warm...It was cold and wet, but Beach Bums baseball is back!!!! I'm not sure that we would have been able to play this game last year on the natural surface so right away you saw the advantage of the turf...

On a side note I was extremely frustrated with the problems that occured during the broadcast, virtually wiping out the Labatt Blue On Deck Show and causing me to leave the confines of my booth to broadcast in the visiting realm...It wasn't much better there connection wise...I did my best and hope you enjoyed what you were able to hear...I think the broadcast was also in midseason form...I've got some stuff in the morning to work on and see what I can mess with...

Let me know your thoughts on what you saw on the field...I'll post my thoughts on the first day of action in the league tomorrow...

Opening Night Preview

Tonight the Beach Bums open the 2008 season with high expectations...The 7:05pm game pits the Beach Bums against the travel team in the Frontier League, the Midwest Sliders...All 96 games for the Sliders this season will be on the road before the team moves into a new home and becomes the Oakland County Cruisers...I can't imagine what that is going to be like but Jon Cahill gave me some good insight because he was a coach for a travel team in his first year coaching in the Frontier League...I'd give you the input here...but you'll have to listen in to me tonight...That is what we call a tease :)

Tonight's pitching matchup features RHP Bryan Rembisz making his first opening night start for the Beach Bums...Robbie McClellan started the first game in Beach Bums history back in 2006 while Steve Shippey tossed the home opener last season...Rembisz finished 2007 with a 7-0 record for the Beach Bums to go with a stellar 1.87 ERA...He made seven starts in his 19 appearances, switching to the rotation in August...Rembisz pitches to contact and will rely on the defense behind him...He threw 62.2 innings for the Beach Bums last season and allowed just 13 earned runs to go with 51 strikeouts...

LHP Kyle Kearcher gets the start for Midwest...This is an interesting choice being as the Sliders have former Beach Bum Jeremy Dow available as well as the top pick in the 2008 Frontier League Draft in Drew Bigda...Kearcher played for Kalamazoo for a month last season and made six appearances with two starts before being let go...He did not pitch against the Beach Bums...Kearcher was 0-1 with a 9.49 ERA for the Kings...He tossed 12.1 innings and allowed 13 earned runs...Kearcher walked four and struck out nine...He was released on June 24...

The Beach Bums lineup will be left-handed heavy, but I am imagining that it will be staggered as there are enough switch-hitters and right-handers to go around...

The Beach Bums have never won a season or home opener, going 0-2 with losses to Kalamazoo in each of the past two seasons...One thing Jon Cahill mentioned in the Cahill's Corner interview was to get off to a good start right away...

Check out today's preview in the Record Eagle

Tonight look for the lineups and you can comment on the game, broadcast, and all of that jazz in that specific post...

The Rooster is Made

Yes that was a purposeful misspelling...Think Major League 2...Anyhow, the opening night roster is set...Check it out here...

2008 Roster

John Brummett was kept on as the backup catcher as the Beach Bums let go of Johnny Coit and Ryan Kottke...Again, competition was very high everywhere and I'm sure it was hard to make the decisions...James Conrad was also let go as the roster reached 24...For my full release regarding the roster breakdown (As only I can tell you players come from 15 different states with California boasting the most at 3) follow the link below...

Roster Press Release

That link will also tell you that Bryan Rembisz will get the ball on opening night...the plan for the rotation follows with Ryan Gehring, David Nathanson, J.T. King, and Brett Bostelman...While I still am unsure who Midwest is throwing I will post a preview of the opener when I find out...

I talked with several of the guys who made the team today as well as the coaching staff to prep myself for the season, also taping the first edition of Cahill's Corner which will be posted here following Wednesday night's contest...I am going to have to edit down our beloved manager as I got over 15 minutes of audio from him and the pregame show is only 20 minutes long...Everyone is really excited about opening the 2008 season Wednesday night and the potential that lies ahead...

Chillicothe Sweeps Washington

A grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning by Chillicothe's Montana Dye powered the Paints to a 6-4 win and a season opening sweep of Washington, the defending East Division Champion. JT Thomas, a former Beach Bum, contributed three hits for Chillicothe in the Monday morning matinee...Chillicothe's Ryan Flanigan earned his first save of the season...Flanigan will serve as the closer and won yesterday's game...JJ Hollenbeck started for Washington and allowed just one run in five innings...Washington's closer Kyle Dempsey allowed the grand slam but Alan Stidfole, who stifled the Beach Bums in his debut last season and will throw against Traverse City one week from tonight, took the loss after walking the only batter he faced...

The Weather Outside is Frightful

Second night under the lights following the Kids Club Bash...I heard Suntan was awesome and chipper during the Bash...It was cold outside!!! Temps during practice were dropping down into the 30's and someone actually mentioned the possibility of white stuff outside tonight...I hope not! I wore three layers and was freezing!!

Pitchers went through PFP...Pitchers Fielding Practice...outside of that there were two rounds of batting practice and then practice was called off due to the cold to avoid anyone getting hurt...Pitchers who were scheduled to throw went indoors while the hitters didn't swing but instead had the opportunity to work on their hitting eye...David Nathanson threw as did Jeff Williams, Zac Cole, Nick Pepper, Ted Gjeldum, and Jared Locke...Practice returns to the morning tomorrow, and hopefully the sun can come out as well...It will be the last full workout before the season...

League Wide Cutdown Day

While Chillicothe and Washington were opening their season with the earliest opener in league history, every other team in the league had to trim their spring training roster to a maximum of 28 by the end of practice today...You can always follow the updates by looking at each team's roster or by checking out the transactions link on the Frontier League website...Noteable moves from around the league included Evansville's letting go catcher Gavin Concepcion, who caught for league champion Windy City last season...Evansville also severed ties with Ryan Rachal, who posted 109 at bats for the Otters in the outfield last season...Midwest also made several cuts, dropping Judson Smith, who started seven games for the Sliders last year on the mound...It appears as though most teams have one or two more cuts to make before Wednesday...

The plan for the Beach Bums is to finalize the roster tomorrow...Currently there are 27 players on the roster with the league maximum for opening day standing at 24...

And They're Off!

I figured in the spirirt of Big (Don't confuse me with Jeff) Brown, I'd title this related to horse racing, and also Chillicothe's mascot is a horse...Anyway...The 2008 Frontier League season needed extra innings to reach its conclusion on the first day...Chillicothe walked off with a 6-5 win over Washington on Sunday night...The two teams will conclude their brief season opening series with a 10:00am game Monday...The Frontier League's winningest pitcher, Aaron Ledbetter, began on the hill for Washington...Ledbetter was the 2007 Pitcher of the Year...Brian Gartley, a left-handed LS-1, got the opening night start for the Paints...Offensive highlights included Washington's Chris Sidick finishing 2-for-3 with a homer, three walks, and three runs scored...2007 Frontier League MVP Travis Garcia, whom Beach Bum fans may remember hitting three homers in a game last season, opened the season for Chillicothe with a 2-for-4 showing including a two-run homer in the third...Another former Beach Bum, Jaziel Mendoza, forced extra-innings for Chillicothe with a run-scoring hit in the bottom of the ninth...Washington finished with 13 hits and Chillicothe 7...Ryan Flanigan, in my opinion one of the most underrated pitchers in the league, recorded the win...Kyle Dempsey was saddled with the defeat...Why is Flanigan underrated? Check out these numbers from last year, he led the league in ERA with a 1.28 mark and finished with a 9-2 record in 40 appearances...He tossed 77.1 innings and walked just nine while striking out 56...

NOTES: Other randoms from the weekend...Midwest swept a pair of exhibition games from Kalamazoo...It was a rough night for former Beach Bums outside of the Frontier League as Steve Shippey took the loss in his first start for Schaumburg of the Northern League...Also in the Northern League Tyler Meigs was hit with a blown save after allowing a pair of ninth-inning runs as his Joliet JackHammers fell to Gary 5-4 in walk-off fashion...Both runs were unearned as Meigs threw 1.1 innings and Rob Marconi, who suited up for Windy City last season, recorded the winner for Gary...
