Connections Land Highly Drafted Catcher

Manager Gregg Langbehn helped corral Robby Alcombrack, a catcher who was selected in the 7th Round of the 2006 Draft by the Indians out of high school, by touching base with a former Mets minor leaguer...

Not yet 21 years old, Alcombrack spent three years in the Cleveland system and will be a Rookie-2 because of a Frontier League rule that allows players who are 21 or younger to be considered a rookie in their first Frontier League season regardless of what they should be, or in Alcombrack's case, an LS-1...

Alcombrack is the fourth catcher to join the Beach Bums 2009 spring training roster, joining Patrick Perry, Andrew Barbaro, and Ryan Kottke in the battle for playing time...

Adding Another Arm

There will be another arm on its way to Traverse City for spring training as today the Beach Bums have announced the signing of RHP Greg Ford...

Ford was a dual threat in college at Keene State College, earning MVP of the Little East Conference Tournament...He played outfield and also was a reliever...Ford pitched briefly last season for his hometown team, the Nashua Pride of the Can-Am League...

I had intended for this to be a two-part series, but I had such a good time chatting with the new manager and got such good information that I broke it up into four parts so that you don't have to listen to sessions with audio totaling almost 45 minutes...I will post parts one and two today that have to deal with Gregg Langbehn's managerial style as well as how he came to end up in Traverse City among other things...

After becoming just the second team in Frontier League history to win back-to-back championships, the ThunderBolts will again have a new bench boss. Tommy Thompson is the fifth manager since 2006, and he has a completely new coaching staff save for Mike Kashirsky, who managed the ThunderBolts to last season’s crown. Two managers previously have been able to change the direction of the franchise and now it’s Thompson’s turn to keep that trend in the West Division. Thompson was the 2007 Baseball America High-A Manager of the Year in the Orioles system. This time he will have not nearly as much championship experience as most of the key players moved on including virtually the entire infield. Then again, we thought the same thing in 2008, and that was before a former Major Leaguer joined the fray.

Keep Your Eye On
The bullpen; 39 saves...Enough said. Matt Petty set a Frontier League record with 25 saves in 2007 and stopped 15 contests in 2008. He was sent to the American Association this offseason. Jason Lowey saved six games in 2008 and will likely be among the leaders for the closer role, but he had an ERA over 4.00. Anthony Rebyanski, while struggling in 2008, still appeared in 39 games to lead the team. That means the top two relievers are gone from a 60-win team. Brandon Garner posted a save, but had as many walks as strikeouts.

Hard for a team who has won back-to-back titles to be going down but keep this in mind, the key members of their 2007 pitching staff struggled in 2008 and didn’t make it through the season. Most of their returners for 2009 come from the pitching staff. On the offensive side gone are two Frontier League postseason All-Stars including the 2008 Frontier League MVP and three mid-season All-Stars as well. The production among those players in addition to their other top two performers who are gone? How about 59 homers (59% of their season total), and if you add in two more that are gone its 70% of their total; 317 RBI (58% of the team total)...You get the picture, they need a lot of offensive production to replace the key players from two championship runs. There is a lot of potential among some of the players they have signed, but is it enough to maintain a championship level?

Young Playing Out West

An examination of the Golden League transaction wire has revealed an interesting note...Steve Young, who retired from the Beach Bums earlier this offseason, was listed as signing with the Long Beach Armada today...

Zack Kalter appeared briefly in the Golden League in 2008 as a pitcher for Orange County...On the same day Young signed, Long Beach also announced that former MLB Player Hideki Irabu has also signed...Another familiar name is Jose Lima, also a former MLB player who has signed with Long Beach...

A unique feature of the Golden League is that it is the lone professional league to boast teams in three countries, having members in Canada and this season adding a team in Tijuana, Mexico...The Armada begin play on May 21 at Calgary in Canada and will play an 88-game schedule...Former Big League shortstop Garry Templeton is the skipper for the Armada...

Young was a three-year member of the Beach Bums, becoming a fan favorite while starting at second base...He holds several franchise records, among them hits in a game (Four, which he has done twice and shares with several other players), hit by pitch in a season, career hits, career games, career runs scored, career stolen bases, and career at bats to name a few...Young is also the Frontier League record holder for sacrifice bunts, dropping down 21 in the 2006 campaign...

Young batted .249 for the Beach Bums last season with a homer, 24 RBI, and 33 stolen bases...

Frontier League Draft Next Week

Manager Gregg Langbehn will head to the Frontier League tryout camp next week along with Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel and the remainder of the Frontier League looking for talent to add to the roster...

The tryout camp will be hosted by the Washington Wild Things at CONSOL Energy Park on May 4-5...The draft will take place on May 5 and teams are required to take at least two players from the draft to spring training...

The Beach Bums own the eighth pick of the 2009 draft and will pick eighth in each of the subsequent rounds based off of last season's performance...The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti own the first choice while Evansville and River City each have two first round selections...

Last season the Beach Bums selected Pete McEneaney (Pictured) with the sixth pick of the first round and added two others (Will Jackel and Charlie Yarbrough) in the second and third rounds...McEneaney spent the entire season in a Beach Bums uniform...

Nick Pepper was also a Frontier League draft choice, taken by Kalamazoo in the first round of the 2007 draft, which was the last time it was held at Washington...

Goetz Headed to Rockford

Former Beach Bums outfielder Mike Goetz has inked a 2009 contract with the Rockford RiverHawks...Goetz was released in spring training by the Pirates after signing near the end of 2008...

Goetz played in the Carolina League with the Lynchburg Hillcats, the High-A affiliate of the Pirates for the last month of the 2008 season...He appeared in 12 games primarily as a center fielder after spending most of 2008 in left for the Beach Bums...He posted seven hits in 34 at bats for the Hillcats...Goetz was 2-for-3 in his debut with Lynchburg...

Goetz was a Frontier League East Division All-Star starter in left field for the Beach Bums last season and hit .314 on the season with 14 doubles and 22 RBI...He dominated Frontier League pitching early in the season, owning an average of .537 in May, and sporting a .344 mark at the All-Star break...Goetz posted three games with four hits to match the single game team record...No player has posted that many four-hit games in team history...He also stole a career high 22 bases...Goetz was the the third player to be signed from the Beach Bums to affiliated ball last season...

Goetz will be an LS-2 by Frontier League standards in 2009...
